MEET YOUR CAPTAIN

Hello! My name is Matt Kopec, and I am the owner/operator of Whittier Marine Charters and Whittier Boat Rental.

Since childhood, it seems I’ve always been out on one fishing quest or another. Being out on the ocean has remained my passion to this very day…there is simply no place I’d rather be.

I hold a U.S.C.G. Master’s License, am first aid/CPR certified, and have many, many years of experience plying Alaskan waters. Having navigated Prince William Sound and the Northern Gulf for nearly two decades now, I have come to know the area and its fishery extremely well. In addition to running and maintaining my own vessel, The Swee’ Pea, I possess a broad range of experience and training on larger vessels as well.

Back in 1996, I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. This background has certainly served me well, and I can readily answer any of your questions concerning the wildlife, history, or geology unique to our region.

When I’m not in a boat, I love spending time with my family. I am currently raising two sons…your future deckhands. I also enjoy hunting, hiking and a wide range of other outdoor activities.
